Head Personal Trainer, Meredith Parker, became Meredith Falcon when she was married at a local Baptist church to longtime boyfriend and minor league baseball player, Ryan Falcon. The ceremony was at Croaisdale Country Club in Durham and all the trainers from ActivEdge were in attendance. Meredith was so elegant and beautiful on her special day.
ActivEdge and Tom Duhling Training Systems paired together to help sponsor a local women-only sprint triathlon. Ramblin’ Rose women-only triathlons are designed to celebrate the empowerment of women. These super-sprint triathlons consist of a 250 yard swim, 9 mile bike, and 2 mile run.
The staff at ActivEdge had the pleasure of training and rehabbing 15 athletes that are headed to college this year:
Jay Bowman – graduated from Durham Academy. A dual-sport athlete who was looking to play both soccer and lacrosse in college before breaking his neck in a freak accident in a spring lacrosse match. He has been cleared to continue soccer and will attend Hampton-Sydney College.
Head Physical Therapist, Brian Diaz, and his wife Caroline, welcomed a beautiful baby boy into the world at UNC Hospitals. The youngest ActivEdge client, Braden Gabriel, was born at 10:07am after a long and tedious labor. Both Caroline and Braden were healthy and in good spirits.
When Don Jones, the Jordan High School girls varsity soccer coach, called down the bench, and Taylor Ray, a talented mid-fielder who tore her second A.C.L. (anterior cruciate ligament) at the end of last year, motioned for me to come help her warm up on the sidelines, I turned to look at her parents, Rusty and Janet, and could see the trepidation in their eyes. “I was just hoping and praying to get through this moment,” Janet would later tell me. After an extensive active warm-up and a few more minutes of calming Taylor’s nerves, she bounced up and down on the sideline waiting for the ball to go off the field. A few seconds later, the referee signaled her in, and Taylor jogged out to join her teammates. Once play resumed, she quickly fouled a girl, aggressively defending from behind. “Not much has changed,” I said to a nearby parent, referring to Taylor’s trademark fearless style of play. I then looked over at parents and smiled knowing that Taylor had taken a giant step in her rehabilitation.
ActivEdge became a leading sponsor, this year, in it’s forth year of participation in this great event! We had several families (including some dogs) that joined us in supporting this strong organization. A special thanks to the Drewry’s, Ervin’s, and Ward’s for bringing their families and participating. Placing among the top 3 in their age groups included: David Drewry, 2nd in 40-49 males and 21st overall, and Jody Christmas, 2nd in the 50-59 females. Total registered for the 5K race was 1,089 people. Race registration and packet pick-up was the day before at ActivEdge.
Late this past fall, head physical therapist and personal trainer, Brian Diaz summited Mt. Rainier, with good friend David Olson, in the State of Washington. It took the three of them, including their guide whom they nicknamed “El Toro”, a little over 48 hours to get from Paradise Inn and the Visitor’s Center to the top and back. They started out on a Monday afternoon and settled in a wooden shelter at Camp Muirthat evening.
ActivEdge client and UNC-Chapel Hill postgraduate, Amy Hedrick, was the top finisher in her class in Duke Liver Center Half Ironman. Amy has been training hard for several months combining cardio work, intervals, and resistance training to help her achieve her goal of completing her first half-Ironman. A tough course located just outside of Durham, she needed to swim in a wind-exposed lake for 1.2 miles, bike a 56 mile loop, and then run 13.1 miles. We are so proud of her accomplishment and dedication. Congrats Amy!
ActivEdge sends 13 more recent high school graduate athletes from its year-round and summer programs to college with high hopes and expectations, both scholastically and athletically:
