The DOUGHMAN is a charity quadrathlon whose primary function is to raise funds and awareness (through event participation and the attendant advertising) of the Durham Inner-city Gardeners program at SEEDS. If you’ve visited the Durham Farmers’ Market on any Saturday morning, you may have already visited the DIG booth to purchase the wares that the clever and hardworking youths of DIG have planted, cultivated, and harvested all in an environmentally and socially sustainable space housed at SEEDS.

ActivEdge sponsored defending champion and 2nd place finisher in this years race, Dain’s Place in the 2nd annual Doughman Race. Dain Phelan, a regular ActivEdge attendee, trained diligently to get ready for the race, sported the orange shirts with the ActivEdge logo and talked trash throughout the race while holding onto a 3 min lead going into the 4th and final leg. Team ActivEdge also fielded a team made up of Chris Ray, Tom Duhling, Taylor Ray, and Brian Diaz and came in 4th place. They were the only team in the top 10 that had a female as one of the legs in this male-dominated race. Taylor held her own, despite Dain’s trash-talking and shove after he finished his sandwich, and was able to maintain 2nd place going into the last leg.

Unfortunately, after eating a quarter pound hamburger topped with chili, cheese, hot dog, and bacon, then running over 2 miles, Brian could not finish the cupcake 2 blocks from the finish line. And the team that had been over 1 min behind caught up and passed them. Brian is looking for redemption in next years race after letting his teammates down!
